Ever since I learned of this way back from the WC Fields doc, STRAIGHT UP!, I've really wanted to see it. The way Steiger told it, Carlotta Monti thought he got it just right.
I just read Carlotta Monti's book - she wrote that a few hours before he died, Fields said to her, "Grab everything and run - the vultures are coming!"
I know it probably doesn't matter, but I was wrong when I referenced STRAIGHT UP! (I recently re-watched it). It was actually during a Private Screenings with Robert Osbourne that Steiger related that story.

Wow! That's really awesome. I've always been a fan of WC Fields. Definitely looks like Steiger got it right.
