Papa Lazarou

I would have posted a clip from the movie adaptation of the show but I thought it was pretty poor - which is often the case. If any of you haven't seen it yet, this clip is from a [fairly] recent classic television series from over here called 'The League of Gentlemen' featuring one of my favourite and scariest characters - Papa Lazarou, proprietor of The Pandemonium Carnival (a travelling freak show). Those of you with a penchant for Hammer Horror, The Wicker Man, freaks and British comedy should tune in when you get a chance.

YES! We had this wonderfully sick show over here, courtesy of BBC America (and maybe Comedy Central showed it, too?). Those guys are incredible. FREAKS will bring us together!

It'd never get made this way here. His golliwog look is too painfully reminiscent of minstrel shows - a taboo subject.

The character is wonderfully developed and Shearsmith inhabits it completely. That's something one has to remind oneself with this show - that it's only three guys doing it - they truly transform.

That's funny you would say "golliwog." I had to explain that to a friend recently.
